How Natural and Lab-Grown Diamonds Are Formed
Natural diamonds formed deep within the Earth's mantle over one to three billion years ago under conditions of immense heat (up to 2,200°F) and extreme pressure (over 725,000 pounds per square inch), subsequently brought near the surface via ancient volcanic eruptions in kimberlite pipes.
Laboratory-grown diamonds are created in controlled modern facilities that replicate these intense natural conditions using two primary advanced scientific methods:
• Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD): A thin diamond seed crystal is placed in a vacuum chamber filled with carbon-rich gases (such as methane). Plasma energy breaks down the gas molecules, allowing carbon atoms to crystallize onto the seed layer by layer.
• High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT): A diamond seed is placed inside a mechanical press that subjects pure carbon to extreme heat and pressure, melting a metallic catalyst flux and allowing carbon atoms to precipitate onto the seed crystal.
Identical Physical, Chemical, and Optical Properties
According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and major gemological institutions (including IGI and GIA), laboratory-grown diamonds are authentic diamonds. They possess the exact same crystalline carbon structure, hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), refractive index (2.417), optical dispersion (0.044), and thermal conductivity as diamonds mined from the ground.
Traditional handheld thermal diamond testers will recognize a lab-grown diamond as genuine diamond because of this identical physical composition. To differentiate a natural diamond from a lab-grown diamond, gemological laboratories use specialized spectroscopic instruments that detect subtle growth patterns, trace elements (such as nitrogen aggregation), and photoluminescence signatures.
Grading Reports and Laser Inscriptions
Both natural and lab-grown diamonds receive professional grading reports from recognized laboratories like the International Gemological Institute (IGI). However, the reports are clearly distinguished:
• Report Identity: The document header explicitly identifies whether the specimen is a 'NATURAL DIAMOND' or a 'LABORATORY GROWN DIAMOND'.
• Laser Inscription: Lab-grown diamonds typically feature a microscopic laser inscription on their girdle—such as 'LABGROWN IGI' followed by the unique report number—ensuring permanent transparency.
• Origin Transparency: Our atelier strictly separates natural and laboratory-grown collections across all routes, catalogs, and enquiry drafts so you always know exactly what you are shortlisting.
Pricing Differences and Long-Term Considerations
The primary practical distinction between natural and lab-grown diamonds lies in supply and pricing structure:
• Price Advantage: Lab-grown diamonds offer significantly lower cost per carat compared to natural diamonds of equivalent specifications, enabling customers to maximize carat weight, color, and clarity within a given budget.
• Market Context: Natural diamonds derive value from geological rarity and finite global reserves, maintaining an established secondary resale market. Lab-grown diamond prices have adjusted over recent years as production technology has expanded. Resale values cannot be guaranteed for either origin; purchases should be guided by personal aesthetics, ethical preferences, and budget rather than financial speculation.
